In Autumn 2016, Prof. Gabriele Langendorf of Hochschule der Bildenden Künste Saar invited more than ten members of our studio to ArTollKunstlabor, where we worked on art production for about two weeks. ArTollkunstlabor is located at Bedburg-Hau, a small town on the Dutch-German border. Different from a conventional gallery and art museum, it is a site of experimental arts where artists can stay for a short period of time and be inspired. During the Second World War, the property was a psychiatric hospital complex, where patients were slaughtered en masse. Against this special cultural and historical background, ArTollKunstlabor hopes that artists are inspired and that both authors and viewers are healed and have their souls purged amid this peculiar setting.
Nowadays, the sorrowful history has barely left a mark on this territory, instead, it has contributed to the community being solitary and independent, which prompts artists to think and create. What impressed me most during our residence was one of our short trips: we walked from ArTollKunstlabor to Schloss Moyland, admiring chestnut trees, streams and mushrooms all over the mountains along the way with an autumn breeze, and were soothed by Mother Nature. Inspired by this experience, I took the interaction between humans and nature as a theme to produce "Packing the Nature"series.
In this series, I plainly portrayed what I saw and heard in the forest as well as my sadness about the destruction of nature, including the notion that artificiality is displacing natural forces and my wish of packing the wonder of nature. Plastic bags are industrial goods. Its artificial colour is an antithesis of natural ones and thus reveals an anti-natural tendency. Resplendence, in this series, refers to the construction that human beings are made to pursue a better life, though such construction inevitably transforms and intrudes on the environment. I did not pay too much attention to the criticism of the relationship between nature and mankind during my leisurely residence, as I was convinced that an early definition would ruin the possibility of discussion and reasoning, and would like to depict my observation of man and nature. Man's intrusion of nature is unpreventable, but the way of which is changeable and diverse. I am therefore more concerned about the balance between the two. In this series, I would like to express my wish towards good life, while this wish and the well-being of the natural environment are mutually dependent. Protecting nature is therefore the responsibility of mankind. With the support of Art For All Society(Macau), I am able to bring this series back to my hometown, Macao, and share it with viewers.
