燈光裝置 / Acrylic on canvas. print on canvas. light installation 尺寸可變 / Dimensions variable 2018 此組作品為一組燈光裝置創作.

This artwork is a set of light installations. I utilise the transmission properties of light to interpret the human landscape of Macao throughout the change of time and space. Before the lights are switched on, the artwork only shows a white surface, with its blankness symbolising our unawareness of the passing of time and people. Once the lights are on, the images hidden on the canvas become visible. The paintings, displayed in pairs of similar yet different images, presents the social scenery of merging cultures where people seek commonalities while respecting each other's differences. When the lights are on, the images will jump from left to right, representing the city's changes in time and space while serving to remind us to capture such changes with own eyes.

Made in Macao 澳門沙土. 陶土 / Sand and soil from Macao. |
According to historical records, the Macao Peninsula only covered an area of 2.78 km2 in 1840. Since the first land reclamation project in 1863, the area of the peninsula has been expanded to more than 9 km2. In merely 100-odd years, we have created a stretch of land two third times the size of the original area through human intervention, which has made us a "creator" in the real sense. I have embraced the identity of a Macao born-and-raised artist in my creation of this set of artworks, during which I sought to realise the idea of "Made in Macao" in a fundamental sense, by utilising the sand and soil that are used in reclamation projects as the base material, as I contemplated the relationship between living and land expansion.

The major technique I adopted for the creation of this set of artworks revolves around "faithful reproduction", which is also an important research and creation topic of mine in recent years. During the process of reproduction, I strived to deliver a faithful copy of the subject in a way that is meticulous without any subjective emotions. I also juxtaposed the original item and its replica to blur or even invert the relationship between every-day things and art creations. I expect viewers will be able to discern the nuances between the two things - a ready-made object and an art creation - only at the very moment when they study them with attention. And before that, they may not realise immediately which is a man-made creation, which is exactly the question I am posing with this series -
What is real? What is art? |
